Words by Suzanne O’Brien, Chair of The Fifth Trust, and Kallum McGuire Lewis.

When we talk about inclusion, we often hear the words equality and equity used interchangeably. But in the work we do supporting adults with learning disabilities at The Fifth Trust, understanding the difference between these two ideas is essential.

Equality means giving everyone the same resources or opportunities. It assumes a level playing field, where everyone starts from the same place and needs the same kind of support. But that’s simply not the reality for the people we support.

Equity, on the other hand, means recognising that different people have different needs – and then giving them the tools and support they need to succeed. It’s about fairness, not sameness.

At The Fifth Trust, equity is reflected in the way we design our services and shape our decisions. Every adult who joins us is supported through an individualised programme tailored to their interests, skills, and support needs. This involves creative, flexible plans built around what truly motivates and empowers that person. We offer our students great choice – including 20 different activity sessions to choose from – ensuring they are active decision-makers in their time at the Trust.

We believe it’s important to talk about this distinction – not just within our organisation, but more widely. Because creating a fairer, more inclusive society means moving beyond the idea of treating everyone the same and instead asking: What does this person need to thrive?

We recognise that true inclusion isn’t achieved through blanket support but through thoughtful, responsive, individualised care.
